Description

"Alexandru Ioan Cuza" Memorial Museum is housed by the Palace of Culture, which was built in the first decade of the nineteenth century by the treasurer Sandulache Sturdza, commanding to the Viennese architect, Johan Freiwald, the construction of a luxurious residence on the settlement of the old mansion of his forefathers. The original style was neo-classical, preserved by the residence's chapel, style especially imposed in Moldavian civil architecture of that time.

Costache Sturdza, in 1847, "changes Ruginoasa house after the Gothic architecture", employing for this the architect Johan Brandel. The restoration works were completed in 1855.

The building, which still preserves the features of Gothic style, inspired by German romanticism, has a square base, with a floor, each of the four facades being characterized by the same elements: large platforms, balconies supported by stone slabs, etc. The great resemblance to the palace of Miclauseni, Iasi county, is not a coincidence, because it was built by another branch of the family Sturdza.

Damaged during the Second World War, the palace regained its specific architectural charm and beauty after 1978, when it was renovated. Its theme includes two major exhibitions tours:

  • On the ground floor there was arranged a documentary part illustrating moments of life and work of the Prince Al. I. Cuza;
  • In the rooms upstairs, is reconstituted after the information and material available via the original parts that are still intact, the atmosphere of days of joy, of silence or struggle, the Cuza family lived in the Palace in Ruginoasa.

Program: 9:00 - 17:00, Monday: closed
