Highlighting Gorj art and the spirituality was the goal of culture-loving people, which was materialized through the establishment of this institution, which is among the first museums in the country. Its founder is Alexandru Stefulescu (1865-1910), teacher and director of the boys primary school in Targu Jiu, where he founded a collection of archeology and history in 1893.

Two ground floor rooms of the Administrative Palace were destined to the museum exhibition, and after two years have been transferred to the new building of Tudor Vladimirescu Gymnasium. Then, after the war, historical pieces were exhibited in Tudor Vladimirescu School.

The need for a special museum building was arising, goal materialized by entrepreneur spirit of the Women League of Gorj, led by its chairwoman, Aretia Tatarescu. A  fundraising campaign was organized and the project belonged to architect Julius Doppelreiter.

The County Museum includes the following collections:
  • Alexander Stefulescu Department of History and Archeology  - medieval, modern and contemporary history, collection of numismatics (Romanian era), collection of documents Alexandru Stefulescu (XV century - century), old books, icons, archaeological pieces of prehistory, Dacian and Roman eras;
  • Constantin Brancusi Department of Fine Arts.

In addition, the heritage of the institution also includes: the Museum of Traditional Architecture from Curtisoara, where the department of ethnography was moved, which enriched its heritage by transferring here the Gheorghe Tatarescu Complex in 2002, the memorial houses: Constantin Brancusi from Hobita village, Pestisani township, Tudor Vladimirescu from Vladimir, Ecaterina Teodoroiu from Targu Jiu and the cave from Polovragi.
