AddressMitropolit antim Ivireanul, 29

Antim Monastery - (1714-1715) was founded by Metropolitan Antim Iberian, important cultural figure during the reign of Constantin Brancoveanu. Initial shape resembled a fortress monastery, the church in the center and the cells were on sides that formed the perimeter of a square.

In every corner of the monastery there was one turret. The entrance into the monastery was made under a tower, through a gate. Homes were located on the southern side, and they continued with the chapel, on the east side and cells.

In the current configuration of Antim Monastery new cells can found, the garden and the Pompilian chapel.
The artistic achievement of the monastery stands as a convincing testimony of the capacity of Saint Antim, and of the cultural life in Bucharest since the beginning of XVIII century.

The entire complex represented by the church, chapel, cells, the bell, the houses was made after plans drown by the great bishop and under direct supervision, both architectural and pictorial.

Antim Church is the only one built in the XVIII century with club-shaped plan, the windows are high, with stone carved decorative elements, the capitals and pedestals of the beautiful columns are ornamented with floral motives, large and rich rosettes, an open porch with monumental gates. The monastery is representative for the Brancovenesc classical style, with a slight influence of Italian Baroque.

The nave has two windows in each apse and send to the old structure of Serb churches. The pronaos has an almost square shape. The restoration occurred in 1863 when there were added the pulpit and a place for the choir made of oak, the same sculptural model with pews, by Carol Storck.

Above the entrance door, under the inscription, you can see the snail, sculptured decoration of the emblem of Saint Antim, symbol of faith and humility, surrounded by a laurel wreath with a star on top. The same type of snail had the first key of the church, the blacksmith of the door being located in the National Museum since 1855.

Tradition says that all of the temple’s stone sculptures were made after the Metropolitan Antim’s plans. He painted some icons on the fresco of the walls along with Preda Zugravul: Icon of All Saints and the Icon of the four saints (Alexis, Nicholas, Antim and Agata).
