Arbore Monastery

judetul Suceava, Bucovina (UNESCO)

AddressCom. Arbore, Sat Solca,

Luca Arbore, boyar and "Door keeper" of Suceava during the reign of Stefan cel Mare, built a chapel in 1503 in his court of village that bears his name. Nowadays from the entire complex, there are only the church, the manorial court being destroyed by a fire in the nineteenth century. The Decapitation of Saint John the Baptist" has the commemorative plaque dedicated to St. John the Baptist.

Designed and built in a simple shape and based on the idea of a church of longitudinal type, the building amazes through its great styling. Architectural innovations reveal a great balance of proportions. It is made of brick and stone extracted from quarries in the area. The church's plan is rectangular in exterior without tower.

The elegant silhouette of the construction is accented by extending the outside, to the west, the side walls (with approx. 2.5 m) connected by a semicircular arch and their union at the top by arches. In this respect, it is achieved a semi-open space that appears for the first time in Moldavian architecture. Situated on the western facade, this exterior niche formed, as it seems, the bells' place. The entrance is positioned on the southern side of the building. Arbore Monastery was founded by boyars, as evidenced by the absence of towers.

The church holds inside a false three-lobed plan, the apses are two arched niches in the thickness of the side walls. The straight walls, with large flat surfaces, made by artisans of Hetman Arbore, have introduced caps on the nave and the narthex, eliminating the initial semi-cylindrically. The low arches, without spirals, slopes and Moldavian arches system give the church elegant proportions, proving to be a valuable building.

Located in the narthex, the ark is considered the most valuable funerary insignia of Gothic style in Bucovina. It was kept just a few furniture objects and also the tomb shrine of the founder of the monastery, Hetman Luca Arbore, who was killed at the command of Stefanita Voda in 1523. At the initiative of Ana, sister of boyar Arbore, will be done after 38 years after the building of the church, in 1540, the external and internal painting ensemble.

At the request of Arbore's successors, interior and exterior frescoes were made by the Moldavian master, Dragos Coman of Iasi in 1541. As a spokesman of the secular world, it comes out from the spontaneity of painting, and the transparent color, the characters' construction. Dragos Coman introduces through the monastery church painting one of the most secular monuments of Moldavian art. Its decorative quality, warm colors and light, rhythm and elegance of the figures,  really impresses the visitors.

The votive paintings in the narthex and the nave (which depicts the founder and his family in two ways), a portrait of the Virgin Mary, the emperor Constantin cel Mare etc., are works of art that impress everyone. Unfortunately, the interior painting was seriously damaged in XVII-XVIII centuries, when the building was left without a roof. The painted church from Arbore Monastery is listed in UNESCO patrimony.
