Aroneanu Church

Iasi, judetul Iasi

AddressLoc. Aroneanu,

Aroneanu Church is dedicated to Saint Nicholas, and was built in Aroneanu village, near the city of Iasi, in 1594, by Prince Aron Voda (1591-1592, 1594-1595. The church is located on the road out of Iasi in the north-east, on Lake Ciric. The history sais that before this monastery there was another one called "the Greek" or "Greek monastery of Iasi", which had the same patron, built by Alexander Lapusneanu in his second reign (1563-1568).

The church of the former Aroneanu moanstery show interest from the artistic point of view, the harmonious proportions, but also through outdoor and very original decor, unique in medieval art history of Romania. The socket has as ornamental elements a row of fluted with a height of about 1 meter, and the walls to the vaults, arches framed and deepened by moldings, following a torus-shaped belt and the cornice. The tower is in the form of a prism with 12 sides and is decorated with arches framed by moldings and placed on two bases: first square and the second one in shape of a star.

Church walls are decorated with elements of ceramic (tiles) oven, green with bluish reflexes in the form of six-pointed stars, oak leaves, spear and peak circular disc, featuring intricate geometric patterns, being used a special technique. The tiles are incised in plaster, and this decor made in relief (now lost) is considered as a possible inspiration for embroidery in stone on the facade of the Three Hierarchs Church and Dragomirna Monastery.

A row of tiles is placed under the cornice, a row of disks and stars, arranged alternately, is located above the belt and under the belt is a row of disks between two stars. The church interior is not painted inside, having in a beautiful wooden iconostasis.
