Banffy Palace

Cluj-Napoca, judetul Cluj

AddressPiata Unirii, 30

Banffy Palace was built between 1774 and 1785, on the sides of a rectangular courtyard, by count Gheorghe (Gyorgy) Banffy. The palace is considered the most representative baroque building from Transylvania. The Rococo frontispiece has the Banffy family emblem and statues of characters from Roman mithology: Mars, Diana, Apollo, Perseus, Hercules and Minerva. Since 1951, the palace housed the National Museum of Art from Cluj-Napoca and its valuable heritage of paintings, graphics and decorative art.

The core of this heritage consists of Virgil Cioflec collection that meets the works of famous artists: Nicolae Grigorescu, Demetrius Paciurea, Stefan Luchian with those of genuine talent: Theodor Pallady, Vasile Popescu, Camil Ressu and so on, exposed in more than 20 rooms.
Moreover, there are works of lesser-known artists of the eighteenth-century in Transylvania. The first floor of the building, which houses the Art Gallery, was closed in 1990 because of the advanced state of degradation of the building and was reopened in 1996. National Museum of Art from Cluj-Napoca was EMYA Award nominee for the European Museum of the Year 1997.
