Banloc Castle

judetul Timis, Banat

AddressSat Banloc,

Banloc Castle was built in 1793 by count Lazar Karatsonyi. Between XIX and XX centuries, Banloc Castle enjoyed many improvements. However, beginning with the first world war, the castle entered a state of degradation because of the devastation caused by the Serbian occupation.

In 1935, the castle is sold to the ex-Queen Elizabeth of Greece, the sister of Carol II of Romania. She makes changes, renovating the whole complex, the castle and the park that surrounds it. Thus, the castle remains a major touristic site for the Banat area until 1948-1949 when it is robbed.

On 7 August 1939 an important article appears in the “Dacia" newspaper about the history and aesthetics of the castle. The author, Father Ioan B. Muresianu, said that "Banloc’s beauty is given by the park which takes a good part of the right wing of the village, ending its surrounding walls – like ones of a castle - in the center. At the crossroad of the alleys there are Roman statues and lapidary inscriptions, chiseled in the first decades after the conquest of Dacia, taken from Sarmizegetuza after a german paleography study enlightens me. Among the lines of trees, sit in circles and connected with the cemented wounds, one of the 100 acacia, brought to America by Maria Thereza (1740-1780). Banloc Castle walls have a Gothic sweetened line with the arrow pointed top, in front of the park. It was built on the old ground in 1783."

Before the robbery in 1948, the castle impressed with a vast collection of antiquities, rococo paintings, paintings and sculptures that wore famous Italian names and a collection of arms. Also draw attention the collection of cartoons with the Mummy brought from Egypt.
