Banu Church

Banu Church is an important historical and architectural monument of Iasi and was documentary certified in 1638, during the reign of Vasile Lupu. The church is located between Lapusneanu and Banu street, with a summer garden in the vicinity and the sports course of the National High School. The church built of oak beams was burned during the Cossack invasion, after that being built in stone around 1800, at the initiative of Metropolitan Iacob Stamatti, by boyar Savin Smuncila, with the patron "All Saints Sunday".

This imposing building, 37m long, 12.5m wide, 16m height of the roof and the bell tower built by a further 3m, is located on an area of 365 sqm. The current halidom religious, which has its origins in 1705, was built in 1802 and is considered representative of the Romanian late Baroque.

The church was built on the territory extending to the big "coomb" on the edge of town, today called Yellow Coomb (Rapa Galbena) and resembles in size with St. George church and other monuments around. For conceiving plans and supervision of the construction, Metropolitan Iacob Stamate appealed to a famous architect from Transylvania, Hee Leopold for designing the grand edifice in baroque style. The bell tower built in 1882 is above the narthex, and has three concave vaults inside with the pulpit out of the wall.

The exterior decorations, the mark of the Baroque style is evident at the large and bright windows, with baroque cornice and roof framing roof. The painting and sculpture of the iconostasis are made by the painter Eustratie Altine in neoclassical style. Banu Church remained in Iasi history as a place that takes care especially for those in need. The remarkable work of urban architecture that went beyond the Baroque style period, reaching the new style of the seventeenth century, the classicism, Banu church bears the seal of European culture and civilization, enriching the spiritual and artistic heritage of the city.
