AddressLoc. Barsana,

Description

The Monastery “Synaxis of the 12 Holy Apostles" from Barsana is a convent, located at 22 km southeast of the Sighetu Marmatiei city, at the exit of Barsana, to the Slatioara bridge, where the large areas of Iza grove narrow, near Stramtura city. This monastery belongs to the Romanian Orthodox Bishopric of Maramures and Satu Mare.

The entry to Barsana Monastery can be done from the 17th kilometer of the County Road (DJ) 186, then it passes under a beautiful gate in the “Maramures" style. The alley leading to the monastery curls up until the actual entry is made on the haughty Tower. From the wooded church dedicated to "The entry of Virgin Mary into the church" starts a paved alley surrounded by flowers that leads to the Priory, remarkable creative transposition of the wooden churches style of Maramures.

On the left side of the alley there is a summer altar and an "Agheasmatar" (liturgical bowl where it is kept the holy water), and on the right part, at some distance, there is the Artist’s House - a charming villa designed to accommodate, for rest and recreation, all the scholars and artisans of this beautiful sacred church. Behind the Priory and on the side road can be found the cells, workshops and a series of household annexes and in the south-east of the monastery, close to the Tower - the bell, there was once the Museum.

Beyond the good order of the monks, the monastery of Barsana fascinates with its stylistic unity, purity of lines and the faultless artistic sense that governs the entire edifice. The beauty of the architecture, decorative sculpture and iconography of the monastery, represents true synthesis of peasant’s genius, that attracts all those who want to enjoy the welcoming spirit of the place. Whether you are a simple pilgrim or a tourist, the beauty of this holy monastery will sink in the soul.
The wooden church of Barsana Monastery is included in UNESCO world patrimony.
