Bicaz Dam

Bicaz Dam is an accumulation lake situated on Bistrita river at a few kilometers upstream of the city Bicaz. Is also called Lacul Izvorul Muntelui (Mountain Spring Lake) and has a length of about 40 km. The water accumulated in the lake is used to produce electricity in the "Bicaz-Stejaru" hydroelectric power. The power plant has a capacity of 210 MW, the dam being a descendant of monks masterpiece from St. Munte, engineer Dimitrie Leonida, who built it between 1950-1960. The dam was held, as now, by the domes nearby the monasteries hermitages, absorbing life, anonymous drama and especially prayers.

The height of dam is 127 m, maximum width at the base is 119 m, 435 m length of the canopy, the volume of concrete: 1,625,000 cubic meters, the average length of the accumulation lake of 35 km, retaining normal rate: 509 m, width of the accumulation lake: 200, 2000 m (Hangu area) - Dam surface: 3260 ha, maximum water volume: 1250 million cubic meters, total volume: 1230 million cubic meters, useful volume: 930 million m³ - volume of protection against floods: 100 million m³ - volume of water under the operational level: 200 million cubic meters - the average depth of the accumulation lake: 18 m, maximum depth at dam 97 m.

Dozens of villages have been displaced from the valley of Bistrita in other areas of the county to accommodate the accumulation lake. The whole area was flooded by the waters of Bistrita, after moving the villagers. From above, from the dam, you can admire the impressive view to the massive Ceahlau, to Bistrita valley or the lake Bicaz, the dam joining Mount Gicovanu with Obcina Horst.
This could be the end of a beautiful trip to Harghita, or end of a trip on Bicaz Gorges.
