Blacksmiths' Bastion

Brasov, judetul Brasov

AddressGeorge Cosbuc, 34

Blacksmiths' Bastion dates from 1521 and is located in the northwest corner of the city center. The Blacksmiths' Bastion is documentary certified in 1529. The bastion is built in a pentagonal shape, arranged on three floors, with openings for oil and shooting goals.

Tradition says that instead of the Blacksmith Bastion there was once a tower destroyed by flood in 1526, then restored in 1527, the year that are certified for the first time the ruins of the smiths tower.

A "tower of blacksmiths' is recorded in the munition list since 1562, located in the “Catherina" neighborhood and situated between Pottery and Loaf towers - currently unidentified.

On July 30, 1667, another flood produced by a torrential rain has devastated the fortifications of the place, and in 1668 the Smiths Bastion received its final form. The great fire of April 21, 1689, brought this fort in a state of ruin, being restored after 20 years.

Inside the bastion there were wooden galleries supported by consoles. Since 1734, the bastion was used only for non military purposes, as a granary and as a home. In 1820, instead of the blacksmiths tower, there was built a smaller gate - made by master builder Joseph Jani – bearing Brasov’s emblem on the frontispiece. Because it aggravated the circulation, the gate was demolished in 1874.

In 1709 the bastion was rebuilt, adding the brick arches. In 1923 the Brasov Archives that were situated in the Council House, were brought inside the Bastion and remain in this place permanently. In 1938, the building underwent another renovation work, reaching the form we know today.
