Bologa Fortress

judetul Cluj, Transilvania

AddressLoc. Bologa,

Located in the village of Bologa in Cluj County, the citadel is a Roman castrum, named Resculum. The fortress is the oldest settlement in the area mentioned in documents. It was built around 106 DC, and used as a garrison for II Hispanorum cohort, whose mission was probably Roman border protection.

The Romans tried to strengthen their borders, and in the II century A.D. settlers from Greece were brought, most likely from the area of Patras. The ruins of the camp are visible in present time in a place called 'Gradiste', although a vast part of the area was used for agriculture. Near the camp are also found ruins of Roman baths.

Beside the camp, on the opposite bank of the river Hent there is a fortress, mentioned for many centuries as Sebesvar which appeared on most area maps in the Middle Age. In 1304, at Sepuswar, Bologa Fortress was certified for the first time in documents.

King Sigismund of Luxembourg gave Bologa Fortress and Bran Castle to Mircea the Old, after signing the treaty of alliance against the Ottoman Empire, in Brasov, in 1399.

An essential point on the road that connects with Oradea, Bologa Fortress was used as a refuge for the local population in times of siege. He gained importance in the XVII century, when the Ottomans conquered Oradea and stopped collecting taxes. The Sultan ordered its demolition, but the order could not be accomplished. Bologa Fortress was later destroyed by an explosion. Tower and much of the walls were preserved.
