Brukenthal Castle from Avrig

judetul Sibiu, Transilvania

AddressLoc. Avrig,

The summer palace of Samuel von Brukenthal (1721-1803), governor of Transylvania, was built between years 1780 and 1785 in the style of Schonbrunn Palace from Vienna. The edifice is built in Baroque style, U-shaped with a central body and 2 side wings. Here was presented the famous collection of Baron Brukenthal consisting of 212 paintings and 129 prints, currently being at the Brukenthal Museum.

After the death of the Baron, the building had several careless owners, so it quickly degraded. Today only the decorated ceilings recall the luxury of the old times. The palace had one of the most beautiful parks, organized in terraces that descend towards Olt meadow.
The area, of over 20 hectares, has been arranged in accordane with the model of French gardens, with fountains, a splendid staircase and many side paths, benches, vases, stone statues and a Oranjerie, where there were cultivated dates, cardamom, almonds, melons and pineapple.
