Buciumeni Monastery

judetul Galati, Moldova

AddressSat Buciumeni,

The first nuns were established in the Buciumeni forests in the XVth century. Although written testimonies were not kept in this sense, the majority of the old documents have been lost or alienated. It seems that through the years 1420-1430, during the reigning of prince Alexandru cel Bun, a wooden church with the patron Saint Nicholas and several cells were built here by the inhabitants of nearby villages.

Until the XVIIIth century, details about the ones who lived in hermitage in the forest of Buciumeni are not known, but the monastic tradition is not lost, though the church was burned and destroyed several times. In the year 1700 the old place of worship was reconstructed by Serdar Manolache Radovici, owner of an estate in the village and hallowed in Buciumeni village in 1718, by Bishop Sava of Roman.

After 1960, at the monastery remained some of the nuns, in very tough conditions. The monasticism was refreshed after 1990, under the leadership of nun Macrina Huma, when the whole monastic complex was arranged, a bell tower was built, new bodies of cells and household annexes.

Annually, the titular saint day is marked by organizing a pilgrimage of more than 1,000 students from all high schools of the diocese who participate at the St. Liturgy and the religious discussions with priests who participate at the celebration. The monastery management intends to organize a cultural-missionary centre and a creative camp for students.
