Description

Caldarusani monastery is situated on the edge of forests Vlasiei on a peninsula surrounded by the beautiful lake Caldarusani, which had a role of defense in troubled times.
Here he founded Matei Basarab in 1637 - 1638 Caldarusani monastery, on the place of a wooden hermitage.

About the origin of the name "Caldarusani are many legends", but the name, in the opinion of the great historian Nicolae Iorga, probably comes from the shape of the land, namely the landfall of the plain in this region, in the form of a boiler or pot.
The monastic ensemble is composed of large church, the cells initially placed on three sides, the eastern side of being a simple wall. Over time both the church and the cells have been modified.

Fire in 1945 caused great damage, and in 1964 on the place of the refectory and chapel was built a beautiful room with vaults hosting the collection of religious objects and icons.
Large church dedicated to the Saint Demetrius is three-lobed shape, with a tower on the nave, supported by four pillars of building and two small towers on an enlarged narthex, being more or less similar to the Dealu Monestery church and the one from Curtea de Arges.

With impressive volumes, interior painting, exterior decorations and valuable artwork, marks a new stage in the evolution of local architectural elements; the church was a building representative for religious architecture of the Romanian Land.
Entrance to the monastery is on the west side under the bell tower, built of brick with massive walls and niches with initial defensive function.

The monastic ensemble includes St. John the Evangelist church cemetery built in 1817, abbey, office, xenodochium and other outbuildings built in the nineteenth century, among them a building that belongs to the Institute of Seismology.
The monastery was an important cultural hearth, proof of this fact being the Gospel given to the monastery by Prince Matei Basarab in 1643, the rich collections of manuscripts made by monks who lived here, school of painting that has worked since the eighteenth century.

The monastery has a rich collection of religious paintings and icons arranged in three halls, old icons in the years 1739 - 1799, 10 icons made by Nicolae Grigorescu between the years 1854 to 1855 when he lived here, the sacred vessels, vestments, embroideries and an important collection of large sizes paintings of Gheorghe Tatsrescu and Sava Hentia.
Also, the monastery library owns a large number of books and manuscripts in Romanian, Greek, Latin, Italian, French and German.
