Capidava Archaeological Museum

judetul Constanta, Dobrogea

AddressLoc. Capidava,

Established in 1984, Capidava Archaeological Museum is housed in the former building of the school. The exhibition pieces valorize Roman and early medieval archeology remains: ceramics, glass, sculptural art, ornaments (from the excavations conducted in the city Capidava).

The Capidava Fortress is located on the right bank of the Danube, midway between Harsova and Cernavoda, the highway linking the two, that passes along the citadel’s walls. The fortification has a rectangular shape with the long sides from NW to SE - 105m x 127m, with thick walls of over 2 m and 5.6 m high, with 7 towers over 10 m, of which 3 rectangular towers, 2 towers quarter-circle and 2 intermediate horseshoe-shaped towers, a gate 2.50 m wide situated on the SE side which connects it with the rest of the territory and strategic exit on the SW side of the tower from the Danube, where was equipped the port.

This fortress holds a special place in the Roman defensive system and is part of a series of camps and fortifications built during the Traian Emperor at the beginning of the II century. The place was very adapted to the character of the building that offers a wide area of surveillance: a rocky massif which rises between the foot of the slope descending from the NE and the Danube. The advantage of the massif was that from the strategic point of view, namely a natural ditch that ran from the Danube.

The strategic importance of the place determined the settlement of a military camp and the development of a civil center in the Roman era.
