Capsa House

Bucuresti, Muntenia

Phone021 3144038
AddressCalea Victoriei, 36

Capsa House is situated opposite to the National Military Circle, on Calea Victoriei, corner with Edgar Quinet street, in Bucharest.
The house was built in 1852, and was originally a modest building with one floor that belonged to Governor Slatineanu.
In 1874 it was bought by the famous confectioner Grigore Capsa (former student of Boissier, Paris).

Grigore Capsa converted the house in a cafeteria, café, restaurant and hotel, representing for long time the meeting place of many personalities from Bucharest (politicians, literates, journalists, etc.).
In 1886 Capsa Hotel opened. Its first director, Bourdell, was previously manager of Paris Hotel Cafe Anglais.

In 1908, Capsa Hotel was described by the British magazine "John Bull" as one of the best hotels in Europe, being compared with the hotel "Douglas" in Madrid, "Cappelo Nero" in Venice, "Giappone" in Verona and "Hungaria" in Budapest.

Capsa House was for a long time considered to be the only house of artists, politicians, diplomats and foreign aristocratic families during their visits in Romania. Here they found the Western aristocratic atmosphere.
