Carlomanesti Monastery

judetul Galati, Moldova

AddressLoc. Carlomanesti,

Carlomanesti village has a population of over 200 families and is located at 40 km North-East of Tecuci and at 33 km south of Barlad. Near this village, in a forest valley, exist the ruins of a church situated around the ruins of a cemetery, where the locals know it was a monastery.

Carlomanesti Monastery, located in northern Galati County, near the village with the same name, inherits the monastic traditions from the Carlomanesti – Cercesti – Cauiesti areas, in which the testimony about the old settlements belongs to the fifteenth century. We have certain documents related to a monastery situated near the one we know today, only for the end of the seventeenth century, when the abbot was Priest Jora. The monastery was integrated in the eighteenth century into the current of spiritual renewal promoted by St. Paisie from Neamt, one of the most important monastic centers in the southern Moldovia.

The monastery was mentioned as a metoh (subordinated monastery) of the Diocese of Romania in 1809, but in 1821 it was fully destroyed by the eterists and by the Turks. That is why the monks were forced to flee. The few monks who remained changed with about 1 km the place of the monastery, building until 1824, a brick church, which exists today. The monastic life continued to resist during the Second World War. In 1957, the church was lighten and burned and eventually, abandoned.

The monastery was reopened in 1997 at the initiative of His Grace Bishop Cassian of Dunarea de Jos. Later there was built a chapel, consacrated in the summer of 2004 as well as a body of cells.
