Cartianu House

judetul Gorj, Oltenia

AddressCom. Turnicesti,

Description

From the national road 66 starts the county road Turcinesti-Schela, which connects via clough Valcan with Transylvania, and that reaches one of the most picturesque villages in northern Oltenia, village Cartiu.

The edifice, which occupies a picturesque position on the bank of river Cartiorul, was made at the end of eighteenth century.
Built originally as a fortified house, it has undergone over time many restorations, subsequently evolving in the form that is found today and that is an example of understanding the association of timber structures and forms of masonry, the dominant note of architecture in the Carpathian foothills area.

Built on three levels,Cartianu House is a core of three rooms on the first floor and second floor, each of them having on the west side added probably later, a body where there are the toilets. The elements that give a note of authenticity of the monument are the chain of porches that can be seen from all sides and the access steps which make the connection on vertical. Ground floor, which is slightly sunken below ground level, presents two cellars with a separate entrance, connected on the east side by an open hall, having as decorative elements two massive arches of mixed masonry - stone and brick.

Ventilation of these rooms was made through windows of relatively small size, which from the later amendments were partially closed. On the northern and southern sides were made as a consequence of the house development one room that was intended to accommodate small animals.

The first floor presents around the center of three rooms, perimeter, a large porch, interrupted on the east side of a block of masonry.
At the second floor, arranged in the same way as the first, the porch is bordered only by wooden pillars. To the floor lead two stairs, both exterior: one, the picturesque and monumental at the same time, added to the side facade, where is the main entrance, protected from rain by the roof of the house itself, which extends above it leaning on a tall wooden pole; another on the opposite side caught between the porches and discreet framed in their design.
