Cetatuia Monastery

Iasi, judetul Iasi

AddressCetatuia, 1

Cetatuia Monastery shows its elegant silhouette on the blue sky at the end of the forest on the coast of a hill, having the same name. It is a remarkable monument of feudal art of the second half of the seventeenth century, being a foundation of Gheorghe Duca, Prince of Moldavia and built between 1669-1672. Cetatuia monastery, together with all  the buildings around it, is one of the finest architectural masterpieces of Moldova of the seventeenth century.

The walls were used as a refuge for Princes of Moldova and for the army to resist the Tartar invasions. The wall has a height of 7m and a width of 1.4m, made of massive stone, corner towers and battlements. The bell tower makes the access inside. The lack of external rich ornamentation gives the church "a calmer look".

The Church of Cetatuia Monastery, which is dedicated to the Holy Apostles Petru si Pavel, is the most important monument of the entire complex, being located in the middle of the enclosure. The vaulted cellar in the basement, fortified princely houses,  royal house which houses a feudal art museum, Gothic hall (refectory) and the church, form the entire architectural complex of Cetatuia.

The church's plan is traditional, structured on: the altar, nave, narthex and porch, and the apses have a semicircular shape inside and polygonal on the outside, and each apse has three windows. There are seven buttresses which support the outer walls of the church. The porch is tall, has a rectangular shape, with spherical vaults on pendants and is enlightened by two windows.

The set of paintings is of great artistic value, is represented not only by its monumental compositions, but also by the too small ones or by the medallions. It shows a lively appearence, painters have managed to give characters a powerful expression and a human drama. This Moldovan rustic painting is performed by brothers Mihai, Gheorghe and Dima from Ianina (Greece).

Another old building here is the royal bath, with a square plan and ended with a hemispherical dome on which rises a lantern tower provided with 8 windows, a hemispherical cap with a circular opening above. In the niche of the south wall of the church are the remains of the founder, and slightly to the east is a small funeral ledger, beautifully carved and placed on the tomb of Mary, daughter of the prince. At Cetatuia functioned a printing press brought from Venice by the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Dosoftei, that typed with Greek letters.

Among other works, in the eighteenth century appeared here the complete work of  St. Simeon of Thessalonica. The monastic complex Cetatuia was totally renovated between 1970 - 1980, by Abbot Archimandrite. Cetatuia is a spiritual oasis and an important attraction for many hermits, finding here spiritual support.
