Cheia, judetul Prahova

AddressSat Cheia,

Description

Cheia Monastery is located on Valley Teleajenului, at an altitude of 887 m, in the foothills Ciucas (Eastern Carpathians), between Tampa and Cheita streams. In the area there have been established Transylvanian refugees and pastors since the XVII century, after the Uniate in 1701 and in 1770 was founded on the mountain Balabanu a wooden hermitage, wearing patron Sf.Nicolae (settlement devastated by Turks, seven years later).

In 1790, the hermitage was restored, all wood, on another settlement (to the Red Mountain) - the altar of this second place was taken by this church of the Cheia Monastery. The new place of worship, which is dedicated to the Assumption, was located, as is attested in a royal charter given by Alexander Ipsilanti in 1797, is inhabited by 19 monks. The wealth of the hermitage was very poor and, consequently, Prince II donated by the same act, an annual amount of 50 thalers in money to customs officials at Valeni - gift held until 1825 by all the gentlemen next. Between 1832-1835, the hermitage burned at the base. There have been preserved imperial icons, a pall, candlesticks, in 1832 and a seal carved in 1820 by Abbot Dometie.

The present church was built of brick and painted between 1835-1839 by Gheorghe Tatarrascu in 1837. The Cheia complex includes a quadrilateral building, occupied, on the south side, east and north, three units of cells high in 1844 (as confirmed by the inscription that accompanies the icon of the Virgin Mary built the south front of the body). To the west, the left bell monumental stareteasca the house, building built in 1902, in the style of architecture popular in the area.

The large church of the monastery, built of brick and stone, has a trefoil shape. The nave, which rises above, the four arcs with different openings, but with the same height, the tower of wood, the narthex is separated by two brick pillars that make up three arches. The spire was added Pantocratorul surrounded by nine bands of angels, the prophets and apostles, and a wide representation of angelic liturgy.

On the arch that supports the tower toward the west can be admired: in the center, Abraham, south, Kiss of Judas and the 30 pieces of silver Judas received and to the north, Jesus before Caiaphas and the denial of Peter. Western bay of the nave shows, the sky, the faces of Isaac and Jacob, and the sides of four scenes depicting the trial and pass Savior. In the middle of the nave, along the walls, are drawn in the 40 martyrs of medallions Sevastia. Register below is the portraits of military saints, great martyrs, stalpnici and archangels. The jambs of the windows of the nave are four pairs of saints doctors found no money, and in the aperture of the three arches of the nave and the narthex can be admired saints John of Damascus and Damascus, Gregory Decapolite saints and holy Nicodemus from Tismana and saints Barlaam and Josaphat.

From the high dome of the narthex defend northern image of Christ Emmanuel, along with cherubim and seraphim, and the southern sky, God the Father flanked by angelic hosts. In the upper register are depicted twelve scenes of Hymn, and in the lower portraits venerable monks. The top of the external walls is adorned with a den cin Deisis. The collection includes icons imperial and other icons dating from the XVIII - XIX, but also various other objects of worship: oo cross pectoris, bedernita century. XVIII, several silver chalices and crosses, a gospel overlaid gilded silver in 1852 and others.

The collection includes a series of altruism, the oldest being the Metropolitan of Moldova Gabriel Callimachi (1761), and the other bishops and Filote Chesarie Buzau. In turn, the monastery library bears witness to the richness of intellectual and spiritual life of the key. Mirror relations between the three Romanian provinces, and especially of the strong cultural links between Transylvania and Wallachia, the collection of manuscripts and old printings, Romanian and foreign, totals over 120 titles, and extend for a period of 150 years of carturareasca (1750 - 1900).

Besides spiritual guidance given to all those who walked into a monastery, the monks of the key were actively involved in social life, both through charity, but even as soldiers - have mentioned the fact that several monks have fought for the release Transylvania, the more so as Bratocea Pass was an important theater of operations in WWI. Being a relatively new foundation, Cheia had a right to a school clerk. However, the fact that there has existed a school library psaltichie motivates the existence of two music manuscripts, printed at the monastery Cernica by 1840. Despite the settlement that isolates them from the world, the monastery has donated many sets of books in all areas inhabited by the Romanians.
