Church from the Hill

Sighisoara, judetul Mures

The Church from the Hill is definitely the most valuable architectural monuments from Sighisoara Citadel. Building this church, dedicated to St. Nicholas, started in 1345 and continued with several interruptions until 1525. The church contains the two older buildings from the upper plateau of the hill: a Romanesque chapel and a dungeon of rectangular shape.
Also, the monument is valuable due to the only one chapel known in Transylvania, situated under the choir, containing tombs from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The church was partially painted on the outside and completely indoors. In 1776 was decided that the painting to be destroyed with the condition to make accurate copies on parchment, which after that disappeared.
The Church from the Hill underwent  two major restoration works: one in 1934, at which point some old frescoes were uncovered and that between the years 1991-1999, total restoration made by the Messerschmitt Foundation from Munich, giving it the current appearance.

Inside were preserved rare pieces of religious sculpture and painting: the pulpit carved in 480, Gothic tabernacle, made of stone and an old holy water front from the fifteenth century.
Polyptych shrine of St. Martin dates from the fourteenth century, and the wooden pews carved by J. Reychmut date from the sixteenth century. The funerary sculptures executed by Elias Nicolai are very interesting, situated inside the church, but also the beautiful shrines brought from the churches from Saes and Cund.
