Cioclovina Cave

judetul Hunedoara, Transilvania

AddressLoc. Cioclovina,

Located at the springs of Luncani Valley, on Cioclovina village teritory, within the parish Bosorod, Cioclovina Cave is the largest cave of the basin. This cave has the greatest potential in the area, due to the complex manner of formation.

Cioclovina Karst complex is famous for the discoveries that took place here: the discovery of the oldest skull of Homo Sapiens Fosilis of Romania, the description of a new phosphate mineral, Ardealite, there were discovered four overlapping Palaeolithic layers, one of the largest deposits of guano-phosphate in the world, the largest calcite monocrystal in Romania etc.

The cave is composed of two parts. The main gallery of the cave is mostly devoid of speleothems because of the guano - phosphate exploitation and traces left by tourists, but nevertheless the gallery impresses us with beautiful forms of corrosion (pressure tubes with diameter up to 5m, marmite of ceiling and wall and by United Sept of Ceiling -6m). Also notable is the huge palaeontological deposit and the mineralogical interest - phosphate minerals new for the science.

The second part is in a perfect state of preservation due to difficult access. This part is distinguished by the great wealth of formations, but most impressive is the Great Hall after the Horn, which is distinguished by the abundance of both common speleothems, as well as the rarest, among which the calcite monocrystal of 113cm. The cave was originally 763 m, but currently has a development of 2002m.
