Clocociov Monastery

Slatina, judetul Olt

AddressManastirii, 3

Clocociov Monastery is situated in the southern part of town Slatina and is mentioned in documents from the XVI century, from the time of Neagoe Basarab (1512-1521), as it is mentioned in a zapis (document) in 1512. This facility was rebuilt by Mihai Viteazul (1593-1601). The damages occurred after 1628, lead to a new restoration during the reigning of Matei Basarab, by the mandarin Dinicu Buicescu (vel-aga). The building of the church began in 1645 and lasted several months. In XVII-XVIII centuries, the monastery is known by its properties and the revenues, being dedicated to Cutlumus Monastery from Mount Athos.

Since the second half of the XVII century, especially after the secularization of the monastery's assets, monasticism starts to fall down, the earthquake of 1838, the First World War and a devastating fire, resulting in degradation of architectural complex. Between 1980-1981 there have been made restorations with the financial support of the Diocese Ramnic.

A complete information on the monastery offers us the records of 1862, from which we find out details of some constructions totally missing today. We find out from this that the church had three towers. The old reredos was restored, but keeps the two icons and five big royally icons. The courtyard was surrounded by walls and the bell is located above the entrance.

In the form that is today through its architecture,Clocociov Monastery, with all its successive degradations due to restoration, which has sought to respect and preserve features of the old settlements, is included among the monuments from the middle of the XVIII-th century still dominated by stylistic characteristics of the time of Matei Basarab. Like them, the variety of forms is temperated by the sobriety and simplicity of the construction for which the decoration is little used.

The church is made from wall, triconc plan, the interior including the altar, nave and the narthex. The porch is open, with rounded arches on wall round and thick pillars. The inscription dates from 1645, and the front door and the furniture are carved from wood. From the old painting is preserved the votive painting, remarkable family potrait, with portraits of the founders and their direct descendants.

Clocociov Monastery
partially preserves the precinct wall, tall, with massive buttress on the sides, which also give a defense character of the complex. The bell is located in the west side - a two-level construction, the floor is flanked in interior by two niches in the wall thickness over which the tower is built,  rebuilt during the restoration in hexagonal shape with arched openings, in which the bells are kept. On the main facade there is a nicked brick decoration which defines the semicircular shape opening of the gate, where is painted the icon with the patron - St. Archangels Mihail and Gavril. The same decoration continue on the other sides of the tower, and around the openings of the drum.

Inside the monastery we find a museum which holds an important collection of old Romanian art, including icons, pieces of decorative art, especially silverware, embroidery, fabrics and sculptures in wood, books with illustrations engraved in wood, executed in the most popular printers in the country, by famous Romanian artists. Presented with care, they constitute a collection of important historical and cultural value, evoking moments of the past of the monastery and as a long and intense creative activity of decorative arts.

Of a rare artistic quality, representative for the work of Matei Basarab, there are four royally icons: Pantocrator Jesus Christ, Mother of God with Jesus Christ, Saint Nicholas and the Assumption, pieces of large proportions, from Church Samburesti - Olt, worked in the princely workshops of Targoviste and dated from 1647-1645, works given by Marco vel Armas and his wife Rada. Characterized by the archaic type of figures, as well as the decoration of the background and frameworks with rich floral incision and gold, they are included in the style so-called decorative style, which marks the tradition in the old painting of the century XVI and icon painting of the Brancoveanu Age.

Besides the museum, here it is a knitting workshop. Here lived and worked the monk Naum Ramniceanul (1764-1839), author of the New Chronicle from Blaj and History of the Rebellion in Walachia, in which treats the revolution of Tudor Vladimirescu.
The monastery enjoys today modern life conditions and cultivates with honor the concern  for preserving an important vestige of the artistic and historical past of the Romanian nation, with housing opportunities.
