Closani Cave

judetul Mehedinti, Oltenia

Closani cave consists of two galleries: Laboratories’ Gallery and Matei Ghica Gallery and it is located at an altitude of 440 m, has a length of 1100 m. Access to the underground void is allowed by a short opening, but quite large, a true Natural museum, whose galleries host one of the most stunning ensemble created by water in limestone and the bat.

Closani cave hosts over 70 species of terrestrial and aquatic animals, mostly microscopic, used in various experiments. The most prominent is the bat.

The gallery walls are covered with waves of stone falling in cascades. The path winds among the columns, stalagmites and karst formations with scalloped edges, beneath a ceiling decorated with lots of white or in red colored tones stalactites. Everywhere one can see parietal leaks, transparent or reddish stripes interweaving. Next begins the lake area, consisting of some wells, the bottom covered by a layer of clay or calcite, most of them with crystal clear water.

Latest pools usually dry, have the edges lined with belts of large single crystals. These pools, together with alignments of milky white calcite, adorned with crystal jewels that appear in several places on the walls and ceiling, implement us the ambient of Gallery Ghica, where monocrystals are the dominant element. This paradise, where even rock flourishes, is a treasury of splendor, generated by the impressive quantity and variety of concretions that holds. Here there is also a biospeologic treasury by the large number of living fossils which inhabit it, and a laboratory in which research is conducted.
