Cojocna Salt Mine

judetul Cluj, Transilvania

AddressSat Cojocna,

The parish of Cojocna, located in Fizes Plain, stretches over an area of 238 km2 with a population of about 4,400 inhabitants, settled in the village-parish seat Cojocna and villages Boj-Catun, Boju, Cara, Huci, Iuriu de Campie, Moristi and Straja.
The flat and wide meadow, marked by the crusts and efflorescence salt mines from the eastern edge of the village of Cojocna, outlines in the underground an important solit salt rock. The erosion has created large valleys, crossed by numerous salt springs, plateaus with mud, halophile vegetation.

The salt is very near to the surface, the covering layers having a maximum thickness of 6-10 m. Here there are saline lakes formed on top of abandoned salt mines, mentioned in documents of the XII century and used from the Roman period until the Middle Ages. Much later, after 1870, the old mines have collapsed and turned into salt lakes, their waters gaining therapeutic properties. Two of them, Toroc Lake and the Large Lake have been organized in bathrooms that are full in summer time.

Besides entertainment, baths are used in treating rheumatic diseases (osteoarthritis, psoriasis, spondylosis, tendinosis), endocrine and gynecological (chronic cervicitis). The climate is temperate-continental with a moderate shade and is characterized by cool summers and cold winters. The average annual temperature is 9.6 C with a minimum of -5 C in January and a maximum of 20 C in July / August. The maximum temperature may reach 34-35 C, and the minimum of -35 C.
