Description

On May 1, 1951 was inaugurated a museum that consisted only of 4 rooms on the first floor of the building situated on street Crinului no. 1. Attempts to set up a museum manifested long before. Thus, in 1880 the Museum Association from Salaj was founded and opened a museum in Zalau with the support of Department of Astra from Salaj, museum that was active in 1926.

In 1940 this institution stopped its work. In 1951 Mr. Vasile Lucacel received head of the newly established museum institution and started collecting items and organizing a permanent exhibition, which was opened in August 1952 and in 1956 was rebuilt and then completed in 1965 - by arranging the place mentioned above, the sections of folk art and fine art. The current headquarter building was given to the museum in 1969, when started arranging a new exhibition of the three sections: folk art, fine art and ancient history.

The new museum varnished its exhibitions in August 1971 and didn’t undergo major changes until 1986. The museum space extended over time. Fine Art was arranged in another place, on street Doja no. 6, in the former National Bank building.
Department of Art opened in 1981 with the support of master Ioan Sima, a painter born in the village Pericei in Salaj County, receiving the name Art Gallery.

Among the museum collections stand out objects from departments: history (tools, weapons, documents), archeology (the hoard from Guruslau, bronze age pottery, ceramics from Buciumi Dacian, items from the Roman camp from Porolissum - Moigrad), library (9,000 volumes), ethnography and folk art (textiles and costumes, coats, vests, icons), entomology (Lepidoptera and beetles).

By 1985  the exhibition space have expanded by building the new rooms and organizing the contemporary plastic art exhibition
