Description

In 1872, the Archeology and History Company of Bihor County began its activity, who proposed establishing a museum of Bihor. The first museum in Oradea, housed in an eclectic building, specially built for this purpose, completed in 1895 by architect Kalman Rimanoczy senior, was inaugurated in June 1896.

The exhibition had initially nine rooms, where were presented archaeological, historical and ethnographic pieces. It also made possible the expansion of the collections, but also the imposition of some conservation and storage mesures for the objects of archeology, art and ethnography.

In 1918, the museum came to have a collection of 17,640 pieces, of which 1377 pieces belonged to the Collection of the Romanian Catholic bishop, Ipolyi Arnold. It was thought the extension of the collections, thus their enrichment, especially with items representative for the Romanian folk art, and rearranging the museum, which reopened to the public in 1921. On this occasion was printed the first guide, in Romanian and Hungarian, of the museum in Oradea.

For 25 years, respectively from 1946 until 1971, Bihor County Museum constantly added pieces in collections. Therefore, in the '60s were created other sections, that is history, ethnography, art and natural sciences. After the restoration of the Baroque palace, built between 1762-1776 by the architect Franz Anton Hillebrandt, meant to be the residence of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oradea, it was inaugurated on the day of January 17, 1971, at Oradea, Cris Country Museum (Muzeul Tarii Crisurilor - Crisul Alb, Crisu Negru, Crisul Repede rivers).

The curators who have worked and are working here have proved to be outstanding specialists, rigorous investigators of heritage treasure by the departments of History, Art, Ethnography, Natural Science, as well as the Memorial Museums Ady Endre and Iosif Vulcan.

In the museum, there are three annual journals, due to the museographs who worked here over time: Crisia - archeology and history, Biharea - ethnography and art, Nymphaea - natural sciences, 82 appearances, authors books and collective volumes (over 50).

Since 1971until today, the range of interests extended naturally, through the integration of new departments, the Office for National Cultural Heritage (transferred in 2002 to the Directorate for Cultural Heritage National Bihor), Public Relations and Exhibitions and the Cris Country Ecomuseum, belonging to "1 Mai Bai" consisting of the Village Museum of the western Romania and the Natural Reserve 'Piriul Petea'.

If in 1972 there were 25,314 pieces, now the heritage museum amounted to a figure of 389,013 museum objects, of which 216,564 of archeology and history, art 12,554, 16,414 of etnoghrapgy and143,48 of natural science.
