Curtea de Arges Monastery
Curtea de Arges, judetul Arges
| Address | Blvd. Basarabilor, 1 |
Description
Built during Neagoe Basarab's reign, between 1512 - 1517, the monastery is part of the most famous Romanian legend, "Legend of master Manole".
Also known as the Episcopal Church because it was the see between 1739 and 1748, this church has a length of 18 meters, a width of 10 meters and a height of 25 meters. It is curious that the nave and the narthex are not separated by a door, just by a door frame built between two columns.
Over time, Curtea de Arges Monastery was subjected to many restoration works. Present form bears the imprint of French architect Andre Lecomte du Nouy and Romanian architect Nicolae Gabrielescu and dates from the second half of the nineteenth century. The restoration works were finished in 1885 and the church was consecrated on October 12, 1886.
The church’s interior draws attention by mural painting in oil, the work of French painters F. Nicolle, Ch Renouard and the Romanian painter N. Constantinescu from Curtea de Arges, but especially by the group of 12 columns depicting the 12 Apostles.
In the monastery rests the remains of Kings Ferdinand and Carol I and the Queens Elizabeth and Mary.
Historical sources say that at Curtea de Arges took place the canonization on 16 August 1517, of the Holy Hierarch Nifon (1508), Patriarch of Constantinople and Metropolitan of Wallachia (1500-1505). From here, his relics were placed in a silver coffin, gold plated and sent to Dioniseu-Athos monastery.
Also in this church is sheltered the Pious Saint Martis Sofronie from Cioara, one of the defenders of the Orthodox faith in Transylvania.
Because of the awareness and spiritual feature that has, Curtea de Arges Monastery is found on most of the presentation flyers and albums of Romania. Every year, Curtea de Arges Monastery is visited by almost 100,000 tourists and pilgrims.
