Dalhauti Hermitage

judetul Vrancea, Moldova

AddressLoc. Carligele, Sat Dalhauti,

Description

This monastic settlement functioned until 1959, when it was closed and then reopened in 1990 as a settlement for nuns.

The church was built by two brothers shepherds in Dobrogea, with the help of a disciple of St. Nicodim of Tismana and the altar was built where the flame of the legend appeared. One of the brothers became a monk, taking the name of Amfil. He went to Constantinople and there received as gift from the patriarch, an icon who is said to have been painted by the Apostle Luca.

The legend also says that during the trip, the Turkish captured Amfil and desecrated the icon by cutting it with a scimitar, then threw it into the sea. Escaping from the Turkish, the monk reached his village in Dobrogea and during this time the icon came by sea, and then Amfil found it on the shore. He brought it to Dalhauti and today it is the Guardian Angel of the place during the drought, cures diseases and troubles away.

About the miracle-working icon it is said for almost six centuries, and even today, at the monastery in the middle of forests, many believers come to pray every holiday. Dalhauti Hermitage is unique also by the three churches that are inside it.

According to the historian Pamfil Georgian, the Church of "Healing Spring" dates from the years 1461-1468. The church went, over time, through all kinds of transformations and damages, such as in 1829 was rebuilt from the foundation. Destroyed by the war of 1916-1918, the church was again totally repaired, and the last general restoration took place after 1990.

The second church of Dalhauti hermitage, made of wood, dedicated to "St. Archangels Mihail and GavriiI" was built in 1625, by Duca-Voda, but burned in 1827 and was rebuilt from the ground. Its value is given by the pews and baroque iconostasis.

Between 1840-1850, the abbot of Dalhauti Hermitage, Archimandrite Venedict, has built a third church, which had the patron "Saint Constantin and Elena", currently in ruins because of the earthquakes. Now it was proposed for restoration.
