Darjiu Site

judetul Harghita, Transilvania (UNESCO)

AddressLoc. Darjiu,

The settlement Darjiu belongs to Harghita County, situated at a distance of 18 km from the city of Sighisoara, here being found one of the most impressive churches from the region Odorhei.

The Church of Drajiu presents fortifications and was originally built in Romanesque style in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and then was brought to the Gothic style. Strengthened in the XVI century, Darjiu Church is made up of a rectangular enclosure, fortified with six towers.

The gate tower maintains its original appearance, with voluminous stonework crossed by shooting windows protected with wooden locks. The frescoes inside the church, considered to be true medieval values of Transylvania were made in the same period and illustrate the legend of Saint Ladislau of Hungary.

The church’s wall was used as a defense against the Ottoman invasion, but it isn’t as high as that of the fortified Saxon churches, because the village is situated at a high altitude. The wall presents two gates, so that the Turkish entered on the first gate and stuck in the fortress could be burned with hot pitch.

Currently, villagers retain their grain in barns that are still in the castle, and the bacon and ham are preserved in the bastions.
Darjiu fortified Church is part of UNESCO world heritage.
