Drapers' Bastion

Brasov, judetul Brasov

AddressAleea Tiberiu Brediceanu

Drapers' Bastion was originally built and protected by the Goldsmiths' Guild, one of the richest crafts of Brasov in the XV-XVI centuries.
Located on the southeast corner of the medieval citadel (the foot of the mountain), Drapers' Bastion received strong fortifications in order to cope with foreign invasions.

The Bastion stretches on four levels of wood galleries, is built in elliptical shape and has a diameter of 16 m. It is 20 m high and has at its base 2 m thick walls, which had holes for installing small guns.

The first documentary attestation concerning the building of this bastion dates since 1521-1522. Later, while strengthening the city’s defense walls, opposite the Bastion there was built another fortification in the shape of a horseshoe: the Red Weavers' Bastion. From the Aurors' Bastion (become the Drapers' Bastion) was built, also in the sixteenth century, a wall that prevented attackers to access the space of Tampa. In this place there were held, whenever it was a siege, the herds of animals for residents’ food needs.

In 1646, the goldsmiths build a pentagonal shaped bastion on the northern side of town. Consequently, this bastion is transferred to the Drapers' Guild. It enjoys a strong economic development because of cloth orders made by rulers of the Romanian countries for the Court and army’s needs.
