Franciscan Church

Sibiu, judetul Sibiu

The current Franciscan Church initially was, in the Middle Ages, Claris Monastery ("Manastirea Clariselor"), belonging to a severe monkish order. After the Lutheran reform, the monastery was disbanded and the church has been used as a cereal storage for a long time. In 1716, the commanding general at that time, Count Stefan Steinville, managed to obtain from the city administration the approval for the order of Franciscan monks to settle in town.

The church and the Claris Monastery were given back to the Franciscan monks. On June 13, 1716, the celebration of St. Anthony of Padua, the church simply decorated could be celebrated for the first time after the reform; the Divine Liturgy was held by the superior of the monastery, P. Anton Schirner. The church, Gothic at its origins, became Baroque and the monastery was changed and enlarged several times.

Inside the church there is a valuable Gothic statue of Madonna. The franciscan monks were pastors and were very loved by the faithful people. In 1949, during the communism regime, the monastery was disbanded, the franciscan monks were deported in a concentration camp and the building was abusively confiscated.
