On the road to Dunavat, the point known as "Bataraia" name on Ukrainian or Geneviz-Kaleh "meaning Genoese fortress, "fortress" or "village", 2 km from the village Murighiol, meet Halmyra ruins. The roof built to protect the basilica can be seen from the main road on your left.

The first mention of human settlement dates back to Murighiol millennium before Christ. There is remined an ancient human settlement established in a suitable place for both food and for water transport and natural resources that exist in the area. Having a good position, history of this area is very rich. What page is the location on the Danube bank, namely the southern arm of the Danube, who is now known as Saint George, had met all conditions for a flourishing village. In fact the whole area now occupied by common Murighiol, occupies the entire peninsula Dunavatului, located between Sf Gheorghe, Danube Delta, Lake Hills Razelm and city. Access from this area would be known later in antiquity as far Scythiae Minoris,

The settlement has developed on a natural rocky plateau at 2 m above the Danube, with an inclination from south to north, advancing to the Danube with over 90-100m Style native to western cliff line. The native rock, to the east of ancient settlement, describes a wide arc Also joining the endings Dunavat hill (64m). Since 1981 and thanks to archaeological research, it was revealed a strong Romanian city founded in an area with traces of habitation of the century. VI - V and IV / III - II / I a. Chr, which has undergone several stages in its evolution:

* Romanian fortification of land (the last quarter of the century. I);
* Camp of stone - the seat of vexilatiei legions I Italica and XI Claudia Pia Fidelis and state fleet Classis Flavia Moesia (inscriptions discovered at North Gate mentions a vicus classicorum) - beginning of sec. II - the third quarter of sec. III AD.;
* Late Romanian city - the third quarter of sec. III - first quarter of sec. VII AD.

The form of the Roman-Byzantine fortress is trapezoidal, with an area of about 2 hectares, with 15 towers, three gates and three waves of defense. The main monuments uncovered and partly restored are: building no. 1, North Gate, North Gate - West Gate West, Thermae them, the paleo-Christian Basilica crypt which sheltered the bones of the Martyrs Epictetus and Astion, Christians martyred in the city inperioada Diocletian (290). The results demonstrated expertise anthropological facts mentioned in the oldest collection of Acts of the Martyrs (Acts of the Holy ") written by the Dutch Jesuit priest Jean Bolland (1596-1664). Being reconditioned, the ruins, a part of the North Gate and a part of the walls will be rebuilt.
