History Museum from Gherla

Gherla, judetul Cluj

Phone0264 241947
AddressMihai Viteazul, 6

The History Museum from Gherla was established based on a number of collections including those belonging to the Astra Society, the Armenian Museum, the collection of school yearbooks of Petru Maior High school and a part of the Museum from Sic collections.

In 1951, the History Museum became a district museum functioning in a building on Avram Iancu Street, which was demolished as a result of the works of city systematization. In 1986, the entire inventory was moved from Mihai Viteazul Street in the building of Karacsony family house, built at the end of the XVIII-th century.

Over time, the collections have grown through acquisitions, donations and artifacts discovered during the archaeological diggings in the area. Today the museum houses over 18,000 pieces arranged in 5 collections. The improvement of the Museum is made through the permanent and temporary exhibitions, and lately by traveling exhibitions.

The permanent exhibition
(arranged in three rooms) presents archaeological and documentary materials, to illustrate the evolution of human society from the Paleolithic until the XVIIIth century. There are displayed exhibits found in Gherla and surrounding areas dating since the old ages, belonging to the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Dacian and Roman period, as well as those belonging to the Middle Ages.
Given the value of the Armenian objects, the Armenian room was arranged, which presents the visitors a wide range of pieces belonging to the Armenian Catholic religious cult.

In the summer of 2006, was inaugurated the Romanian and medieval lapidary (arranged in the courtyard of the museum), which includes many stone monuments.  In recent years have been arranged temporary exhibitions which have enjoyed a great success.
Among the exhibitions we mention: Weapons and military effects, Achievements of science and art, Icons on glass, Art and tradition in the Somesul Mic valley, Cucuteni Scanteia exhibition - the Magic of restoration, Armenian art and culture in Gherla.

The library museum contains a rich range of publications, resulted in specialty works of prehistory, ancient and medieval history, modern and contemporary history. There's also a large number of periodicals and documents, some even unique.
