Holy Virgin Fortified Church

Galati, judetul Galati

AddressTraian, 1

Being the oldest building in Galati, The Fortified Church "Holy Virgin" was consecrated as a place of worship in September 1647, during the reign of Vasile Lupu. The church was dedicated to Vatoped Monastery on Mountain Athos. For the church's building were used the already existing materials: stone from Barbosi, wood from forests of Covurluiului Platform, brick and lime, sand from Danube beaches etc.

Over time, "Holy Virgin" Church endured all the hardships of the times, being burned by the Ottomans in 1711, destroyed in the Russo-Ottoman-Austrian wars of 1735-1739 and 1769-1774. In 1821, the Ottomans destroyed and robbed the place. The church was rebuilt and restored in 1829 and 1859. The church was turned into a museum and before a restoration was made between 1953-1957. They say there is a secret tunnel under the Danube from the church to the other side of the river, in order to hide the assets and to escape the enemies attacks.

The church's architecture is Romanian and presents some specific elements: the bell tower is provided with battlements and can be used to observe the Danube Valley, and in case of need became defensive fortification. Consisting of two floors, the tower is provided with a room to conceal the values, with two ramparts and an access door, probably to a balcony. The second level was decorated with windows and battlements.
