Specific to the Church of Humor Monastery is the painting arrangement. The innovation appears at the porch, which is open in four arches in broken arch. Inside the church are the votive paintings: one presents ruler Petru Rares' family, the other is in the crypt and presents Teodor Bubuiog and his wife Anastasia, and the third votive painting depicts Hetman and Churchwarden of Suceava Daniil and his wife, Anastasia.
Along with Voronet, Moldovita, Sucevita and Arbore, Humor Monastery is among the five foundations decorated both inside and outside with Byzantine frescoes, which make them unique in the Orthodox world. In fact, the exterior fresco of Humor monastery is painted by Toma Zugravul in 1535, and opens the series of other churches with exterior painting in Moldova.
The architecture of Humor Monastery presents a special interest. There appears, for the first time in the construction of churches in Moldova, the open porch and an upstairs room, that overlapps the tombs chamber. From the porch you enter into the narthex, and further into the tomb chamber and the nave.
In the narthex, the paintings depict the church's synaxaire (calendar), the icon of the Assumption and the icon of the Praying Virgin, angels and prophets. In the tomb chamber, the dome is covered with scenes from the life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the nave are painted faces of saints, the Calvary and Resurrection cycle, and on the dome, Christ Pantocrator. Also in the nave are the founders' paintings. In the altar, on the vault apse is represented, traditionally, the Virgin with Child with the faces of saints bishops and the Last Supper.
Humor Church (dedicated to the Assumption and to Saint Gheorghe) particularly impresses and attracts the admiration for its exterior frescoes. The main iconographic themes are: Akathist of Annunciation (Southern facade), Tree of Iesei (the northern facade), The Great Inquest (west facade) and The Priest Order, which includes a procession of the holy angels, prophets, apostles, bishops, martyrs and pious (side apses and the altar apse). On the southern outer wall worths to mention, at the bottom, the scene of the siege of Constantinople, a reflex of serious events that led to occupation of the Byzantine capital by the Turkish in 1453.
The painting of Humor Church is subordinated to the theological idea of salvation of man who, under the overwhelming impression produced by the contemplation of the frescoes, depicting scenes of salvation history, feels irresistibly attracted to achieve the ideal of Christian perfection. The Church dedicated to the Assumption and to Saint Gheorghe is listed in the patrimony of UNESCO.
