Description

Among the historical monasteries, which decorates the Romanian ground, Hurezi Monastery is considered, along with its hermitages, the most representative architecture complex, defining the Brancoveanu style. It is situated in the northern part of the Valcea county, on the national road DN 67 Rm.Valcea-Targu Jiu, at the foot of the Capatanii mountains, guarded by forests, in a place full of charm and solitude, a silence which is disturbed only by the eagle owls' song, those night birds which probably have given the name of these places and of the monastery.

The ruler has entrusted the supervision of these large and valuable works to its relative, Parvu Cantacuzino, High Steward.
Among the craftsmen we mention Manea, carpenter Istrate and Vucasin Caragea, all painted on the wall in the big church porch. Over time, the settlement was repaired and restored several times, in 1827, 1872, 1907-1912, 1954 and 1960-1978 when was restored the whole monastic ensemble.

It represents the most comprehensive ensemble of medieval architecture preserved in Wallachia. It includes the monastery itself, the infirmary church, founded by Mrs. Maria, wife of Constantin Brancoveanu, built in 1696 and painted by Preda Nicolae and Ianache; the hermitage of St. Apostles, about 50 meters north, founded by the great abbot Archimandrite Ioan in 1698 and painted by Iosif and Ioan in 1700, and the Hermitage of St. Stefan, after the name of the Prince's elder son, in 1703 and painted by Ianache, Istrate and Harinte.

Inside the church there is the empty grave of Constantin Brancoveanu (the relics were brought into the country by his wife and buried in St. Gheorghe Nou church of Bucharest whose founder is Constantin Brancoveanu) and the abbot's tomb, Archimandrite Ioan.
Within the enclosure are kept: the bell tower, princely houses with an elegant hall and above the refectory rises the tall tower of the royal chapel (founded by Constantin Brancoveanu between 1696-1697).

One of the architectural ornaments, which gives Hurezi Monastery an air of celebration and enchant the visitors, is the arbour of the art lover Father superior Dionisie Balacescu, built between 1725-1753, Iosif stone work. Of the great variety of decorative motifs used heraldic coats of arms of Moldavia and Wallachia distinguish, symbol of the idea of national unity.

Since Brancoveanu age, Hurezi Monastery became an important center of culture and strong artistic activity, with a library and a school of painters. Today, the monastery has a rich collection of religious objects, some dating from since foundation: paintings, sculptures in stone and wood from the Brancoveanu age and a library of about five thousand volumes.

Holy Monastery Hurezi
represents the most comprehensive ensemble of architecture and art characteristic of the era of transition from medieval to modern preserved in Wallachia, which is why it is visited by many tourists and believers from our country and from abroad. In 1993, Hurezi Monastery was included in UNESCO patrimony.
