Josika Palace

Cluj-Napoca, judetul Cluj

AddressPiata Unirii

The Josika Palace, also called "The House with legs", is located near Rhédey Palace in Union Square and was built on the former residence of the princes of Transylvania.

Initially, on this place was the Kakas house, which hosted in the sixteenth century the  Transylvanian principles. Then, in the middle of eighteenth century, the building was the residence of Anton Josika (Antal Josika), by then having a single floor.

In 1828, the building was renovated by Janos Josika, governor of Transylvania, shaping it in the current form. On this occasion, to the building was added another floor and the floor above the courtyard wing was built later, between 1864-1865.
On the first floor has been operating the Hungarian Casino from Cluj, and between years 1880-1902 - The Royal Table.

The building has also hosted over time the Palace of Justice, Court of Appeal and the Faculty of Medicine Library. The palace was built in Neoclassical style.

The characteristic element - in the facade is located an austere portico with doric columns doubled in the wall of pillars, supporting a large wrought iron balcony. The facade bears the inscription MDCCCXXVIII (1828), the restoration year of the building.
