Kornis Castle from Manastirea

Dej, judetul Cluj

AddressCom. Manastirea,

Description

The Kornis Castle from Manastirea - was built in 1593 a was a noble residence.
It was strengthened in the second half of the XVII-th century. It is one of the most valuable monuments built in Renaissance style from Transylvania.

The main building of the castle was built by Kristof Keresztúri between 1573-1593 in the Renaissance style.
Over time, the castle has always been filled with secondary buildings.
Around the year 1673 Gaspar Kornis built the II-nd floor of the main building. His son, Zsigmond Kornis finished the castle in 1680, by adding some bastions. He also repaired the castle, after it was damaged during the revolution in the XVIII-th century.

In 1720 the tower from the entrance into the castle was rebuilt (this entry also had a suspended bridge that was lifted during the night or in case of emergency). Also in that period, the castle rooms were decorated with frescos on the ceilings. During the Second World War the castle was destroyed and after the war its collections were burned by the communists or were stolen.

After 1944 it was built only a part of the masonry and the Kornis chapel was taken over by the Orthodox church. There were no serious restoration works, thus today the castle is in ruins. It is known for the two unicorn statues watching the entrance.
