Located near the City Hall, on St. Nicholas Street, behind the church with the same name, Lower Danube Museum from Calarasi was founded in 1950 and worked since 1951 in a nationalized house with 6 rooms. The museum has archaeological profile and began to work in 1954, following the rapid growth of assets.

The development enjoyed by the museum is due to a group of enthusiast intellectuals among who we mention: Nita Angelescu - first director of the museum, Vasile Culica, Iatan Constantin, Gheorghe Florea. Thanks to their efforts there were discovered many archaeological rezerves and historical monuments and the development of the heritage has led authorities of that time to change the museum premises.

The history and archeology section was between 1968 - 1981 part of Ialomita County Museum. The evolution of the museum is vast: in 1981, Archeology Department turns into Calarasi County Museum, and in 1990 it becomes Dunarea de Jos.

In this section worked: Apostol Atanasiu, Niculae Conovici, Museteanu Crisan, Radu Lungu, Tudor Papasima, Paul Susara, Paul Damian, Traian Popa. Built in the late nineteenth century, the building is an architectural monument that holds collections of ethnography and modern and contemporary Romanian art.

The museum presents thematic exhibitions: archeological pieces (pottery, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figurines, hearths, tools, pieces of buildings in the neo-eneolitic the archaeological site Sultana - Malu Rosu, plastic, collection of Roman lamps), ancient numismatics  and medieval exhibits illustrating local history. Dunarea de Jos Museum is organized into two sections: archeology department, respectively the art, ethnography, restoration - conservation department.

The first of the two sections is an activity that focuses mainly on systematic archaeological research, rescue and field archaeological supervision, organization of events with archaeological specific (exhibitions, symposia, scientific papers etc.).

During the second section, the art collection of Dunarea de Jos Museum was initiated by the first director of the institution, Nita Anghelescu. This one was developed by the art critic Paul Susara and Bogdan Pantu. A total of 518 inter-war and contemporary creations, meaning painting, sculpture, graphic and decorative arts, compose the heritage. All this coming from acquisitions, donations, student creative camp since 1984, some were transferred to the museum property  from the former Socialist Culture and Education Committee and other deposits from the Ialomita County Museum.

The traditions and the customs of these places, through field research that led to fast development of the ethnographic, are activity fields that have aroused the interest of the Calarasi museum staff . In 1971 was founded in Slobozia, the ethnography department of Ialomita County Museum, which received in the first years of existence ethnographic exhibition profile.

The Headquarters of Ialomita County Museum with two departments: department of ethnography at the department of archeology was set at Slobozia. The new administrative organization - the territory in 1981, they founded Ialomita and Calarasi.

Currently, Dunarea de Jos Museum has an international program "the Lower Danube peasant" for a longer period. In over 50 years of ethnographic existence a number of specialists workef: Nita Anghelescu, Liviu Mihailescu, Razvan Ciuca, Elena Ciobanescu, Alexandru Vladareanu, Dorina Oarfa, Marian Burciu, Gabriel Bunghez.

Today the restoration work is supported by two experts in ceramic restoration. Their activity is taking place both in the laboratory and in the mobile laboratory for restoration, in the archaeocological sites from Gradistea Coslogeni, Sultana Malu Rosu, Mariuta La Movila, Cascioarele, Durostorum etc.
Dunarea de Jos Museum is open for the visitors daily from 10-18.
