Madona Dudu Church

Craiova, judetul Dolj

AddressMadona Dudu, 13

Initially a wooden church, rebuilt of stone and after that of brick, Madona Dudu Church, having over 400 years, is one of the important religious places in Craiova and had an important cultural and philanthropic role along time.

Called "Holy Mother Precesta Church" or "Church of Dudu", here, in Craiova, was built of stone between 1758 and 1760 by the merchant Hagi Gheorghe Ioan and Constantin Fotescu. The church was built in the Brancoveanu style, placing a wooden little church, next to the fair Craiova, located in Elca ravine. Its founders endowed it with the estate - Maglavitu-Mehedinti, Dolj-Maracinele, vineyards, and many Gypsy slaves, windmill to Jiu and several shops in Craiova. H

Hagi Gheorghe Ioan built cells in which worked the first alienated hospital of Craiova. It lasted until 1841, when, because of the damages caused by earthquake in 1838, was demolished. Until 1844 it was built a church in Austrian Baroque style by an architect of Vienna, summoned by Iordache Otetelisanu.  The place was demolished in 1913 to build another one, more spacious, which is the present church.

Holy Mother Church of Dudu had a marked cultural and philanthropic role, in 1792 putting the foundations of one of the largest foundations in the country - "The Institution Mother of God of Dudu", which carried on a vast work of charity . Part of the revenues were used by the city hall of Craiova for the upgrading works for the city: street paving, water supply source of Gioroc, drainage of the city.
The church has double dedication - Assumption and St. Pantelimon - and in its pronaos lies the grave of the poet Vasile Carlova.
