Description

Maldaresti Museum Complex was held in a picturesque natural environment at about 3 kilometers from Horezu and gathered together the Mansion Houses (Romanian word "Cula") Greceanu, Duca and Memorial House I.G. Duca, all of which being outstanding monuments of Romanian architecture, in which rural elements from the region are harmoniously intertwined with elements of some constructions with character of fortifications.

On these lands, where legend combines the history, "Cula" Greceanu has its beginnings in the XVI century, when Nan Paharnicul builds a tower of defense, and his nephew, Tudor Maldar, add at the end of the XVIII century, the rest of the construction. Legend says that Tudor Maldar, captain in the army of Mihai Viteazul, gets in the hand of the Tartars, being taken hostage. The khan's daughter fell in love with Tudor Maldar. He manages to escape from the Tartars' hands, and together with the khan's daughter, set in Maldaresti, where (XVII century) build their home.

Regarding the etymology of the word "cula", it derives from the Turkish word "kulea" which designates a tower, and in Romania defines, by extension, a house strengthened in form of a tower, which has as main features a high, massive floor, an access staircase to the floor and the successive withdrawals in height of the wall. This type of construction is widespread in the area of Balkan Peninsula, especially in Serbia, Albania, and Bulgaria.

In Romania it is characteristic only of the Balkan area, Oltenia and Western Muntenia. Built by nobbles from Oltenia, as a defense against the threat of incursion of the armies from Vidin and Ada-Kaleh and of the troops of outlaws, these mansion houses have subsisted until today to make proof of their resistance.
