Description
To honor the heroism of the Romanian soldiers was built a mausoleum at the initiative of officers and generals of the 2nd Romanian Army, who founded the "Marasti Society". The mausoleum was built at the level 536, where the battles were held. In 1928 was put the foundation stone of the mausoleum and signed a "memorial act" for its construction. The monument is the work of architect Pandele Serbanescu. The bass-reliefs that decorate the facade were made by sculptor Aurel Bordenache, who was inspired by real facts.
The Mausoleum crypts host the remains of the sacrificed soldiers on these places during the battle in the summer of 1917. In the basement there is sarcophagi with the remains of the generals Arthur Vaitoianu, Alexandru Averescu, Alexandru Margineanu si Nicolae Arghirescu. In the basement there is a small museum featuring the presentation of objects that belonged to General Vaitoianu and weapons from the First World War. On the monument's facade there were placed 15 white marble plaques on which were inscribed names of the regiments and soldiers who participated in the battles of these places.
The commandant of the Romanian Army during the First World War was General Alexandru Averescu (1859-1938). He was also prime minister of Romania in three separate offices, was the author of over 12 military works and honorary member of the Romanian Academy, being awarded with the Order of Mihai Viteazul.
Alexandru Averescu studied in Italy at Turin, where he was commander of the Superior School of War, was military attache of Romania in Berlin and head of the General Staff. He participated in the repression of peasant revolution of 1907 and in 1913 took part in the Balkan War leading the Romanian offensive on the grounds of Bulgaria.
He won glory in the participation in World War I, an ingenious mind, he had initiative, courage and devotion. He initiated the famous maneuvre from Flamanda since 1916, led the second Army in the battles of Oituz and Marasti in the summer of 1917 and after the World War I entered in politics by establishing the People's League Party in 1918, turned into the People's Party in 1920. For his outstanding merits Alexandru Averescu was elevated to the rank of marshal in 1930. Al. Averescu bust, historical monument was made in 1928 by the architect Ion Mincu and is found inside the Mausoleum of Marasti.
