Maxineni Monastery

judetul Braila, Muntenia

AddressSat Maxineni,

Located at the joining of Siret and Buzau rivers, on the way to Focsani and at 35 km from the city of Braila. Here, in 1637, Matei Basarab built one of the most beautiful monasteries of the Romanian Country, military strategic point of great importance at that time.

The prince build the monastery on and old church ruins, the former Maxineni hearth of the village, which was to play a big role in the country defense. The role of defense, for this outpost, is confirmed by the great thickness of its walls, of nearly a meter and a half and it’s foundation of two and a half meters.

In 1708, The Romanian Country Prince, Constantin Brancoveanu, intervene along the prince of Moldavia, Michael Racovita to allow the abbot to cut Siret’s elbow and not allowing "that holy monastery to be destroyed.

Then followed the earthquakes of 1802 and 1856, when the government approved the rebuilding and order the architect Schatter to investigate "if it was necessary to build a new monastery or if it could be brought to perfect condition by repairing it.

In 1916-1917, near the monastery many terrible battles took place and the thick walls of the monastery were destroyed on February 17, 1917, hit by cannon shells and an explosion of the ammunition warehouse, blown up by the Russian armies. Then came the World War II, when the monastery remained deserted.

Starting with 1976, MAXINENI turned into a place of archaeological research, conducted by a group of archaeologists from Braila History Museum, led by the director Ionel Candea, which established that this foundation had, beside the church, inside walls abbot’s house, cells and other important religiously annexes, a military role.
