Mihai Eminescu Theater

judetul Caras-Severin, Banat

AddressLoc. Oravita,Mihai Eminescu, 8
Contact personIonel Bota

Built in 1817, the theater from Oravita is called "Mihai Eminescu" and it is the first theater built in Romania.
Mihai Eminescu Theater is also the first theater in Eastern Europe made of stone and the first in Europe with lighting from acetylene lamps. Architecturally speaking, this touristic site belongs to the Baroque Viennese style and was completed after the drawings made by Ion Niuni.

The interior decorations imitate perfectly the Burgtheater theater in Vienna and were made by Francis Knee, after the plans of Ieronimus Platzhager. It is said that, at the inauguration of the theater participated the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Francis II with his wife Carolina Augusta.

Over time, on the theater’s scene climbed personalities such as Constantin Tanase, Constantin Nottara, Barsan Zaharia, Ciprian Porumbescu and George Enescu. The theater enjoys a modern acoustic that allow the performances not to require amplification.
The theater’s history recalls the year 1868 when, on the stage performed Pascaly band, and there it was also the great composer Mihai Eminescu. In the building of the theater is found a little museum.

Visiting hours: 10:00 - 18:00; Monday: closed.
