Miko Fortress

Miercurea Ciuc, judetul Harghita

AddressPiata Cetatii, 2

Located in the old city administrative center, on the territory of the former village "Martonfalva", on the first terrace of the river, Miko Fortress is the most important monument of the city. Currently the city is located in the Seckler Museum of Ciuc. The Old Music Festival is held in the inner courtyard of Miko Fortress.

Built in neo-Renaissance style at Ferenc Miko's order, council of Prince Bethlen Gabor, to stop the enemy breakthrough from Ghimes, Miko Fortress was built between 1623. Although in 1661 during the Turkish-Tatar attack the castle with a surface of 75X70 m was destroyed.

Thanks to plans of the Austrian general Steinville Stephanus, the castle was rebuilt. The exterior wall with 4 towers was built in 1732, in the same period the banks of the defensive dytch were elevated so that only through a bridge one could reach the city with 16 guns. Food, baking, and armies barracks were stored inside the walls. Until 1764 ithe fortress was used as royal barracks, until 1849 the residence of the Seckler infantry regiment, and in 1873 was taken over by the army of the Hungarian Kingdom.

Restored in 1970, Miko Fortress hosted the County Museum, then Seckler Museum of Ciuc and Office in order to protect the heritage. The Village Museum was arranged in the garden behind the fortress and in the citadel courtyard are held old music festivals.
In the park in front are the statues of Petofi Sandor and Nicolae Balcescu.

From the rich collection of local history of the museum we mention: natural sciences, folk art, folk crafts, religious art, old prints, fine arts of which permanent exhibitions are held each month and occasional exhibitions are held in November.
