Mina Minovici Museum

Bucuresti, Muntenia

AddressNicolae Minovici, 3

Nicholas Minovici remained in history as a passionate collector of objects of art especially folk art in the Romanian region.

The Museum of Popular Arts "Dr. Nicholas Minovici" was inaugurated in 1916 and was the first National Art Museum of Bucharest.
The building was built specifically for the collection of folk art and modern art of Dr. Nicholas Minovici.

Built in 1905, after the projects of Cristofi Cerchez architect, the building is built in the style of a fortified Oltenian house (private fortified buildings from Wallachia XVII-XVIII). The house Dr. Nicholas Minovici impresses with a special decoration in stone, the work of German sculptor Wilhelm August von Beckev.

Retired in Bucharest between 1917-1918, Nicholas Minovici will find the house destroyed in his return to Bucharest, in December 1918. Some sources say that the robbery was committed by German troops during the occupation, who settled in the villa quarters. However other sources sustain that the robbery was committed by the Romans.

The Museum Collection of this touristic site was increased in time through new acquisitions and was donated in 1937 by Nicolae Minovici to the Bucharest Hall together with his Romanian folk style villa.

The Folk art collection consisted of traditional costumes specific to Suceava, Vlasca and Arges regions, pottery from different centers (Horezu Binis, Fagaras) Oltenian carpets with floral and zoomorphic motives, musical instruments, painted eggs, popular furniture and household items, a collection of peasant icons on wood and glass from Transylvania (XVII-XVIII).

Currently the "Dr. Nicholas Minovici" Museum, also known by the name "Villa with bells", is in a advanced state of decay.
