Moldovenesti Fortress

judetul Cluj, Transilvania

AddressCom. Moldovenesti,

Description

The Fortress from Moldovenesti village, Cluj county is one of the oldest fortified settlements from the medieval Transylvanian region (XI-XIII centuries).

The Moldovenesti fortress was built on the location of an ancient Roman camp defense of the road transport of gold exploited in the Apuseni Mountains (Rosia Montana). The fortress was originally in possession of the Romanian population and then to get the Hungarian royal city.

The fortress is documentary attested (indirectly) in a document that dates from 1075. In its original form, the Molodvenesti fortress was formed by a wave of earth surrounded by a ditch, subsequently (XII century) was fortified with stone walls. It was definitively abandoned in the second half of the thirteenth century, because of the massive devastation caused by the Tartar invasions of the years 1241 and 1285

The fortress ruins can be still admired today. In the southern part one can see a ditch, which could have been used as entry into the fortress.
