Description

One of the oldest monks settlement, Moldovita Monastery is situated in the village of Vatra Moldovitei at a distance of about 15 km of village Vama. Moldovita Church has an important and glorious historical past, watching over the centuries the northern border of Moldova. The origins of the monastery's existence remain enveloped in the darkness of time, but the tradition dates it still during the Musatini princes who protected it.

The church lasted until the end of the fifteenth century when, under the peaceful reign of Alexandru cel Bun, due to landslides, was destroyed. Its ruins can be seen from 500m away from the current monastery. Art lover as his father, Stephen the Great, Prince Petru Rares, wanting to continue the existence of Moldovita Monastery, chose the place near the old church of Alexandru cel Bun and built, in 1532, the current church of Moldovita.

Moldovita Monastery was dedicated to the same patron, the Annunciation. It is surrounded by walls and defensive towers, giving the appearance of a small fortress. Without any reserves that there were houses, after the foundations that are seen in the northern part, on whose foundations, between 1610-1612, Bishop Efrem of Radauti, built the "clisarnita" (hegumen house) to his house, organizing a school for clerks and miniaturists, continuing in this way the cultural work of Rares, for keeping the treasures of the Church and the establishment of a school for clerks and miniaturists.

The painting from Moldovita Church symbolizes an unity of general culture - besides religious scenes. Outside can be admired the historical scenes (siege of Constantinople) with cultural aspect (ancient philosophers). On the pillar from the southern front are depicted military saints (St. George, Sf.Dimitrie, Sf.Mercurie). Further, on the same front, on the upper part is displayed "The Hymn" ("Imnul Acatist” in Rom.) one of the most valuable iconographic themes that can be admired in the churches of Bucovina.

Alongside the "Hymn" and "Siege of Constantinople" can be observed the "Bush of Moses" (Rugul lui Moise in Rom.) and the "Tree of Iesei” ("Arborele lui Iesei” in Rom.) (theme which depicts the genealogy of Jesus and doesn’t miss from any church with exterior paintings from Moldova).

The whole interior and exterior painting, which is reproduced after a precise program, was made in pursuing the characteristic principle of Christian art - that of reproducing by painting religious truths. Unlike the painting from the fifteenth century, which prints a more sober air, full of symbolism, the one from Moldova, while complying with the characteristics of Byzantine tradition, presents a more realistic air, narrative.

The realism with witch the characters are approached and how they are disposed in the picture, gives life to scenes. In the entire picturesque ensemble, figures are carefully distributed, planning to improve the harmonious dimensions of the church. The elegant silhouettes of the characters are intertwined with the curve surface of the apses, in perfect agreement with the monumental architecture. The iconostasis is carved in wood, painted and gilded, a priceless artwork. The upper part, until the candles, belongs to the XVI century, and the lower part dates from the eighteenth century.

The painted Church of Moldovita Monastery is included in UNESCO world patrimony.
